Keys to Transitioning to a New Career

The best strategy for surviving difficult times, economic or otherwise, is having a plan. For those who have been caught in the tsunami of unemployment, rebuilding their career is not only challenging but seemingly an overwhelming struggle for survival. The ability to identify your unique qualifications is imperative in order to differentiate yourself from the sea of competition to reestablish your career. Here at New Jersey Career Center, we take individuals through a career exploration and development process to identify and further develop their unique qualifications by not only providing focused job skill training but also offering an intensive job placement seminar geared to building confidence and a strong self-marketing plan. The key to the success of any plan is the commitment of time to implement the plan. Therefore, a daily job search activity schedule is imperative. Individuals who are able to master self-marketing techniques can take their new skills to achieve career goals now and in the future.

The following is an overview of the steps for developing your personal self-marketing plan:
  • Identify the career you really want.
  • Take inventory of your skills and strengths and compare them to the qualifications necessary for the positions you are seeking.
  • Seek out the resources now available to help you build and/or up date the skills you need to be competitive for the career you want to pursue. Funding sources are available for many people through state and federal training grants and a variety of other supportive services.
  • Visit schools and training provider such as New Jersey Career Center who can help you get the skills you need to be successful. Ask questions, tour the facility and speak with other students to ensure that you are comfortable while being afforded the flexibility to enable you to accomplish your goals.
  • Create the marketing package that identifies your unique qualifications. Combine your proven abilities and work history with your new/updated skills targeted for the job you are seeking, therefore making you the "Right Fit" for the job.
  • Implement your marketing plan through networking, industry and individual company research, strong interviewing and consistent follow-up.
Remember, every door is an opportunity. Have the courage to open the door to examine the opportunities that are before you even if they are not an exact fit to your ultimate goal. There is not one straight line to success. Taking alternative routes can enable you to reach your career goals and beyond while weathering the current economic storms.
